Block Paving Driveways Leicester – Costs & Options
Block paving is useful when you want a driveway designed around the house rather than a single uninterrupted surface. The choices go beyond colour: block material, pattern, edge restraint, base preparation and drainage all affect the result and price.
How much does block paving cost?
Checkatrade’s 2026 UK figures put a typical block paved driveway at roughly £90–£130/m², with a separate national comparison guide using around £100/m² as an average. On that comparison basis, 30 m² works out to £3,000 and 50 m² to £5,000. These are illustrations, not Pavemaster quotes. New excavation, poor existing foundations, waste disposal, drainage channels, steps, specialist blocks and detailed borders may all change the final figure. Ask for a quote that states the whole construction, not just a price per square metre for laying blocks.
Concrete, clay or natural stone?
Concrete blocks provide a broad range of colours, shapes and price points. Clay pavers can suit a more traditional appearance and are often dearer. Natural stone offers a different texture and character but needs careful selection for vehicle loading and the particular design. There is no automatic winner: look at actual samples outdoors and consider how their colour will sit beside the house in daylight.
For a restrained design, a single field colour with a contrasting soldier course can define the parking area without making it busy. A herringbone layout is a common choice for trafficked paving; the installer should specify a suitable product and laying pattern for the intended vehicle use. What is beneath the blocks?
A paved driveway relies on the excavation, compacted sub-base, bedding, restrained edges and correctly filled joints beneath and around the visible blocks. If the previous driveway has sunk near a wheel track or doorway, ask how the new construction will address that failure. A new pattern cannot compensate for an unstable foundation.
Levels matter too. The drive should not send water towards a doorway, a neighbour’s land or the highway. The installer should show where rain will drain, whether that is through a purpose-designed permeable system or to a suitable area within the property. Ordinary blocks are not automatically a permeable driveway. How much maintenance should I expect?
Sweep away debris and remove weeds or moss as needed. Check joints and edge restraints periodically, especially after pressure washing, which can disturb jointing material if used carelessly. An advantage of individual units is that isolated damaged areas can often be lifted and reinstated; matching weathered blocks may still require care.

When is block paving the better choice?
Blocks offer design flexibility. You can use a simple field with a contrasting edge, or choose a pattern that works with brickwork, a path or steps. Individual damaged blocks can often be lifted and replaced, although matching aged paving exactly can be difficult. Joints may need sweeping, topping up and weed management over time. If drainage through the surface is part of the plan, specify a permeable block paving system, including its joints and base. Standard block paving with conventional jointing should not be sold as permeable simply because it has gaps between blocks. When does resin bound make sense?
Resin bound aggregate creates a relatively smooth, continuous finish with a choice of colours. It can be an attractive option where a homeowner wants a decorative surface without loose stones. A properly designed resin bound surface can allow water through, but only if the entire construction beneath it can accept and manage that water. A resin layer over an impermeable concrete base is not a permeable driveway system.

When is tarmac a sensible option?
Tarmac gives a neat, functional surface, especially over a larger or simpler area. Edging can introduce contrast and help contain the finished surface. Decide how many vehicles must fit, whether a bin route or step-free access matters, how much cleaning you are willing to do and whether water already collects against the house. Then ask for a site assessment of the existing base, levels and drainage.
