Tarmac can be a practical answer when you want a clean parking area without a complex paving pattern. Its value depends on the work below the asphalt and the way rainwater leaves the surface, so comparing quotes by their final black finish alone can be misleading.
What does a tarmac driveway cost?
Checkatrade’s April 2026 UK comparison uses around £90/m² for materials and installation. Simple area calculations give £2,700 for 30 m² or £4,500 for 50 m² at that guide rate. These are national examples, not quoted Leicester project totals.
A full replacement may need old paving removed, failed foundations dug out and a new compacted sub-base installed. Edging, drainage, restricted access and waste removal also affect the price. A resurfacing proposal over a sound existing construction is a different job from building a complete new driveway, so ask exactly what each tender includes.
What should the specification cover?
Request a description of existing material removal, ground preparation, compacted base, edge restraint, asphalt finish, levels and drainage. If the old drive has cracks, potholes or sunken wheel tracks, ask the installer to identify whether the defect is in the upper layer or the construction beneath it. Laying a fresh surface over a failed base does not correct the reason it sank.
The finished levels should move water away from the house and avoid discharging it onto the pavement. Standard tarmac is generally impermeable. On a front garden area above 5 m², the planning position depends on whether runoff is directed to a suitable permeable area within the property, or whether a different compliant permeable system is used.
